ZNOJMO AND SURROUNDINGS

Znojmo is one of the oldest towns situated in the Southern Moravia. It is visited by many tourists because of many historical monuments and also its position near the Austrian border.

The most famous sights in Znojmo are as follows:

Znojmo Castle – Since 1910 there have been displayed historical expositions of development of the whole town and surrounding (prehistoric, medieval, baroque and renaissance relics, ceramics, arms etc.).
Rotunda of St. Catherine – Roman rotunda dating from 1134 – the oldest building in the region – unique frescoes depicting the rulers of the  Premyslide dynasty can be seen on the walls inside.
Catacombs – underground passages started to be built at the turn of  13th and  14th centuries. Original cellars under every house for storing fruits and vegetables were connected over the centuries and later served for defence and as a hiding place for  town people from enemy. It is a labyrinth of about 26 km tunnelled halls which are in some places in 4 layers one above each other.
Town Hall Tower – Late Gothic town hall tower - 79,5 m high tower  is a famous dominant of Znojmo. You can climb up the stairs and from the observation gallery you can see as far as the Pálava hills or even the Alps in Austria if the weather is good.
Louka Monastery – Founded in 1190, during the Hussite movements destroyed and then rebuilt in Baroque style.

 

Surrounding

National Park Podyjí – The National Park Podyjí is situated near the town of Znojmo. Thanks to its position in the area near the Austrian border where it was not allowed to walk during the communist era, we can find nicely preserved almost untouched nature there. The valley of the river Dyje between Vranov nad Dyjí and Znojmo, which is about 42 km long, is completely uninhabited except for a little town of the Austrian Hardegg. The National Park Podyji is special for its preserved species of plants and animals, its deep curved meanders of the river Dyje and steep rock formations above the river. The visitors can walk along about 76 km of marked paths and 27 km of bicycle routes. 

Šobes – one from the oldest and most visited vineyards in the Czech Republic. The slopes face south and this creates a special microclimate best for growing vine.
Hardegg - the smallest town in Austria. You can see an exposition of the Mexican emperor Maximillian and collection of old American art.

Bítov - a romantic castle over the Vranov reservoir with illusional paintings and a natural science collection including collection of 50 taxidermied dogs is the biggest in the world and recorded in the Guinness book of records.

Cornstejn - ruins of a castle over the Vranov reservoir, it has been uninhabited since the end of the 16th century
Vranov Reservoir – a popular recreational area, built between years 1930 and 1934. The dam wall is about 60 m high and the reservoir about 30 km long.
Hluboké Mašůvky – a village with a famous pilgrimage holy shrine of Our Lady.
Králův stolec - an observation place with a beautiful view of the Dyje valley and Znojmo dam
Laa a. d. Thaya – Austrian thermal bath and public swimming pool
Sports – we can make a reservation of a bowling room with 4 tracks in the facility of Znojmo town swimming recreational centre, or you can play tennis, ride horses, play squash, golf, go fishing or order sightseeing flights over Znojmo and surroundings.

Vranov Dam/reservoir – lovely place to go swimming in summer or to see the Vranov Castle. You can also book a sightseeing boat ride on the Vranov lake with wine tasting and live music.
